|Strategic Qatarization Bi-annual Review Meeting to be held in July|
Under the leadership of H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Industry, the next meeting of the Energy and Industry Sector review of their Strategic Qatarization Plan is scheduled to be held on Sunday 11 July 2004 in the Ritz-Carlton Doha.
At the meeting presentations will be made by senior executives representing Qatar Petroleum, Anadarko, Total, Maersk, ExxonMobil, Qatar Petroleum Development Company, Qatar Vinyl Company, Q-Chem, Dolphin Energy Ltd., Oryx GTL and Qatar Electricity and Water Company.
This will be the eighth such meeting since the initiation of the new Strategic Qatarization Plan in June 2000.
11th Steering Committee Meeting of the Strategic Qatarization Plan
The 11th Steering Committee Meeting of the Strategic Committee Plan was held at the Intercontinental Hotel-Doha on May 3, 2004 attended by Mr. Essa Al-Kaabi, the QP Director of Administration, Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Jassim Al-Thani, the QP Manager Human Resources, and administration and HR managers from the energy and industry sector.
The objective of the meeting was to discuss the agenda of the meeting that included: Qatarization key challenges to 2005, the ability to attract and retain quality Qatari resources, English language competence, and proposals to change Bi-Annual Review meeting in 2005.
In opening the meeting, Mr Essa Al-Kaabi addressed the challenges facing the Qatarization Strategy in the coming years. He noted the Qatar Petroleum initiative of establishing a permanent office for employment guidance – the first time in Qatar – at the Qatar University, with co-ordination of the university.
Its aim is to guide graduates towards the labor market’s actual needs, especially within the energy and industry sector and to enhance its relationship with the education sector. A presentation was made of the achievements of Qatar Petroleum and its subsidiaries in the fields of energy and industry. At the end of the meeting, recommendations were made for furthering Qatarization, concentrating on quality in the process.
QP Opens Vocational Guidance Office at Qatar University
President of the University of Qatar, Dr. Sheikha Abdullah Al-Misnad, opened on April 27, 2004 a QP office for vocational guidance at the Student Activities Building. The opening ceremony was attended by H.E. Sheikh Hamad Bin Jabor Al-Thani, the Secretary General of the Planning Council, Mr Essa Al-Kaabi, QP Administration Director, Dr. Noura Khalifa Abdulla Turky Al-Subaai, QU Vice-President Academic Affairs, Dr. Humaid Abdulla Mohd. Al-Midfaa, QU Vice-President Administrative and Financial Affairs, and a number of senior directors and managers from QP and QU.
Dr. Al-Misnad pointed out that the office will help university students select their scientific and vocational careers, and act as a link between the varsity and the market place in QP and its subsidiaries. On his part Mr. Al-Kaabi, QP DA, thanked Qatar University for providing the office which will guide students on QP job needs. It will also acquaint university staff on the oil and gas sectors, and arrange field visits for the benefit of students in their specialized scientific research in addition to training and offering job opportunities during summer vacations at the QP training center.
English Competence Seminar
The English Competence Team was established by the Strategic Qatarization Plan Committee to address the English language challenges facing quality Qatarization in the energy and industry sector.
Led by Team Champion Yousef Al-Yacoub (QP), its eight members are Dolphin, EnCana, Oryx GTL, Qatargas, Qatar Electricity & Qatar Company, Qatar Petroleum, RasGas and Wintershall.
These team members have coordinated a number of recommendations to maximize the English language competence of Qatari trainees and employees with the goal of meeting the sector’s target of 50% Qatarization by the end of 2005.
Bringing together top managers from energy and industry companies and major education bodies throughout Qatar, the English Competence Seminar on April 19, 2004 was another important step in increasing awareness of and participation in the team’s program towards achieving quality Qatarization.
